About the Collection
A Tribute to Women Pioneers of the Arts & Crafts Movement
The Arts & Crafts Movement in the late 19th and early 20th century (1860-1920) was a response to the inferior quality of mass-produced goods. This movement worked to reform design and décor and promote sound construction using quality materials. The movement transformed the life of the craftsman. Women also contributed significantly in a wide-range of mediums- weaving, embroidery, bookbinding, painting & illustration, stained glass, enameling, metal & jewelry, furniture & woodworking, and architecture.
As typical of the time, women were often not recognized or equally compensated for their skills. Many juggled children, domestic duties, and social reform efforts while creating craft. Several were skilled in multiple media, and some became world renowned for their designs and work.
This collection is inspired by these women of craft who succeeded through grit and determination, sharing their knowledge & skills with other women. In many ways they prevailed against chauvinism, removing barriers for women to follow.
The narrative jewelry collection designed to pay tribute to the women of the arts and crafts movement includes common motifs, materials, and/or colors typically associated with each artist.
